Welcome New Production Manager
We are thrilled to welcome Garland Thompson Jr. to our core staff as San Jose Stage’s new Production Manager!
An award-winning poet, actor, playwright, stage designer, filmmaker, producer, director, and former stagehand, Garland’s life long dedication to the arts will serve him and our upcoming Season 36 in profound ways. You may already seen his work at The Stage, he has served as our Video Projections Designer for multiple shows most recently this summer’s neo-glam punk rock smash hit HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH. He has also worked with many other Bay Area companies including Pacific Repertory Theatre, The Western Stage, & Magic Circle Theatre. He was also recently named the president of the Board of Directors for the Monterey County Film Commision.
Garland has been immersed in the arts from an early age as the son of a theatrical legend Garland Lee Thompson Sr whose life was dedicated to the industry. A former New Yorker, he has worked with some of the nation’s most notable theatres, including The Public Theater, the Negro Ensemble Company, Woodie King Jr.'s New Federal Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club, and the Big Apple Circus. His work as the first official sound and lighting tech at NYC’s Blue Note Jazz Club found him working alongside jazz greats Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, Carmen McCrae, Betty Carter, Jon Hendricks, The Heath Brothers and Wayne Shorter among many others.
Garland also serves as the executive director of the Frank Silvera Writer’s Workshop, an Obie Award-winning theatrical institution founded by his father Garland Lee Thompson, Sr., along with famed actor/director Morgan Freeman, director/actress Billie Allen Henderson, and journalist Clayton Riley. "The Workshop", as it is still affectionately known today, is a staple in the firmament of Black Theatre which has become a home for thousands of aspiring and established artists of all creeds and colors.
His vibrant history and dedication to theatre makes Garland a perfect addition to our mission to produce powerful, provocative, and profound work illuminating the human condition.
Please join us in welcoming him into The Stage family!
